Focus and Scope

Focus and scope The journal is a high-respected, peer-reviewed edition publishing the results of modern scientific researches in the field of history, archeology and ethnography of peoples and regions of the Caucasus from the ancient times to the present day. Comprehensive studies at the interface between history and culturology, religious studies, sociology, art studies etc., are also welcomed.

Our main goal is to serve as an open institutional resource for presentation of modern fundamental and applied researches of Russian and foreign scholars in the history of the Caucasus region.

Among the journal’s objectives is consolidation of the scientific community’s intellectual power to study the past and the present of the Caucasus region; to provide caucasiologists with relevant and professional information of practical, methodological and theoretical nature; providing a platform for discussions of historical and related studies, such as ethnology, political science, etc.; approbation of interdisciplinary studies results.

Format preferences. The preferred publishing format is an original academic study, however, critical reviews on relevant issues, chronicles of academic forums, articles dedicated to anniversaries of famous scholars and obituaries are also accepted. According to the preliminary agreement with the editors, an author may participate in a thematic polylogue (debate) on the journal’s pages.

 

Section Policies

History

The section “History” covers original researches, dealing with the issues of historical development of the Caucasus from the ancient times to the present day, particularly, problems of international relations in the region, transformations of political and social organization, studies of cultural changes and economic modernization of states in the Caucasus territory; oriental studies, historiographical and source studies; latest data on historical sociology, geography and demography of the region in the mentioned period.

Archeology

The section “Archeology” deals with the original analytical researches on the broad spectrum of relevant issues of the Caucasus archeology from the Paleolithic age to modern times (material and spiritual culture, chronology and periodization, socio-economic and cultural historical development, ethnogeny and ethnic history, studies in natural science and archeology, etc.), as well as papers, dealing with the latest field surveys.

Ethnography

The section “Ethnography” focuses on researches, dealing with original material culture, everyday life, traditions, rituals, folk beliefs, family and social relations, peoples of the Caucasus from ancient times to present day. There should also be mentioned papers, dealing with problems of ethnogeny, migration activity in the region, ethnodemography, cross-cultural interpenetration and identity transformation of local peoples under the impact of assimilation and globalization processes.

The section “Expeditions” presents up-to-date findings, obtained during archeographical, archeological, ethnographic and sociological field researches, which are conducted by local and foreign research teams in the Caucasus territory.

Peer Review Process

Peer Review Process

  1. A double-blind peer review method is mandatory for selection processing of all scientific manuscripts submitted to the editorial stuff of "The History, Archeology and Ethnography of Caucasus". This implies that neither the reviewer is aware of the authorship of the manuscript, nor the author maintains any contact with the reviewer.
  2. Members of the editorial board / editorial council and of the panel of peer reviewers (leading Russian and invited independent international experts in corresponding areas of life sciences) perform peer reviews. Editor-in-chief or deputy editor-in-chief choose readers for peer review.
  3. Reviewer has an option to abnegate the assessment should any conflict of interests arise that may affect perception or interpretation of the manuscript.
  4. We aim to limit the review process to 3 weeks, though in some cases the schedule may be adjusted at the reviewer’s request.
  5. A review should determine the compliance of a submitted text with the journal’s scope; assess the degree of its presentation (style, language culture, etc.); convey the novelty and relevance of a scientific study or material.
  6. Upon the scrutiny, the reviewer is expected to present the editorial board with one of the following recommendations:

  • "It is recommended to publish the manuscript as is". At the positive review article is submitted for a meeting of editorial board for the solution of a question of the publication.

  • "It is recommended taking into account corrections following the remarks noted by the reviewer".
  • "It isn't recommended". At two negative reviews to the author the motivated refusal in the publication of work certified by the editor-in-chief or his deputy goes.

 

7. If the reviewer has recommended any refinements, the manuscript is to be sent to the author with the text of the review applied. The editorial staff suggests the author either to implement the corrections, or to dispute them reasonably. Authors are kindly required to limit their revision to three weeks and resubmit the adapted manuscript within this period for final evaluation. The corrected article goes for repeated reviewing. At the same time the reviewer draws the conclusion about a possibility of its publication. In case of a positive conclusion an article will be submitted for an editorial board meeting to receive a decision. In case of negative conclusion from the reviewer the manuscript will be sent for evaluation to another reviewer.

8. We politely request that the editor be notified verbally or in writing should the author decide to refuse from publishing the manuscript. In case the author fails to do so within 3 weeks since receiving a copy of the initial review, the editorial board takes the manuscript off the register and notifies the author accordingly. If author and reviewers meet insoluble contradictions regarding revision of the manuscript, the editor-in-chief resolves the conflict by his own authority. The editorial board reaches final decision to reject a manuscript on the hearing according to reviewers’ recommendations, and duly notifies the authors of their decision via e-mail. The board does not accept previously rejected manuscripts for re-evaluation. Upon the decision to accept the manuscript for publishing, the editorial staff notifies the authors of the scheduled date of publication.

9. The Journal does not publish:

- manuscripts containing previously published material;

- manuscripts that do not conform to the Journal formatting standards;

- manuscripts by authors who refuse from the technical revision of their manuscripts;

- manuscripts by authors who do not follow the constructive recommendations of the reviewer or do not rebut them;

- series of manuscripts that are separate stages of an unfinished research.

10. Kindly note that positive review does not guarantee the acceptance, as final decision in all cases lies with the editorial board. By his authority, editor-in-chief rules final solution of every conflict.

11. Content of each issue of the journal should be approved by editorial board with taking into account all reviewers opinions for each article. Upon the decision to accept the manuscript for publishing, the editorial staff notifies the authors of the scheduled date of publication.

12. Original reviews of submitted manuscripts remain deposited permanently (not less than 5 years).

13. Manuscript reviews are not published. Reviews can be sent to the Ministry of Education and Science of Russian Federation in case of query.

14. A review is provided upon request in writing by the author of a manuscript or the Expert Council of the Higher Attestation Commission (VAK). A review is to be sent without any signatures and names, position or a reviewer’s place of work.

 

Publication Frequency

The journal isues quarterly four times per year.

 

Open Access Policy

The contents of this journal will be available in an open access format after an issue is published.

The publications in the Journal are available to all interested from the moment of publication (Gold Open Access). It provides free public access to the results of research and contributes to the advancement of historical science.

Editorial office currently does not distribute the copies of journals to the authors. Free versions of full articles are available online.

Publishing Ethics

The academic journal “History, archeology and ethnography of the Caucasus” publishes original manuscripts, which comply with international standards of publishing ethics. The editorial staff is guided by the recommendations of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), CSE (Council of Science Editors), EASE (European Association of Science Editors), ORI (The Office of Research Integrity), ACSE (Asian Council of Science Editors) and ANRI (Associations of Scientific Editors and Publishers).

If a violation of publication ethics is noted at any stage of the reviewing procedure, pre-printing preparation process or after publication, the paper will be immediately retracted.

 

         

General manuscript requirements

Authors of reports on results of researches have to submit the exact report on the performed work, and also provide objective discussion of its importance. Basic data have to be precisely presented in the document in accordance with archive, archeological or other sources. The description of references and methods of a research should allow to confirm the accuracy of presented conclusions and hypotheses. Roguish or obviously inexact statements represent unethical behavior and are unacceptable.

Articles of the review and the professional publication have to be exact and objective, and editorial works have to be accurately designated per se.

Access to data and their preservation

The Editorial board reserves the right to ask authors for the raw data of the study (according to the statement of ALPSP-STM on data and databases), and will save such data within a reasonable period after the publication (no less than 5 years).

Originality and plagiarism

Plagiarism takes many forms, from ‘passing off’ another’s paper as the author’s own paper, to copying or paraphrasing substantial parts of another’s paper (without attribution), to claiming results from research conducted by others. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.

Only original works are acceptable for the publication in the academic journal "History, archeology and ethnography of the Caucasus". The journal does not accept any forms of plagiarism, be it the plagiarism of a text, idea or data.

Mentioning any papers of other authors should be provided with references to original sources. Citing of the previously published text should be presented as a DIRECT SPEECH (the text should be enclosed in quotes and written in cursive), with an obligatory reference to the original source. The inclusion of large portions of unoriginal text fragments is unacceptable.

Manuscripts, submitted for publication in the journal, undergoes ANTIPLAGIAT software (free edition) to detect plagiarism in all Russian manuscripts. Google Scholar is used for manuscripts in English. A paper will be retracted from publication if any ineligible borrowing or low rate of originality is detected. Papers will be rejected at any stage of the publication process (even if the article has already been published), if plagiarism is fined, and will be included to the ANRI’s list of retracted papers.

 

Multiple, redundant or parallel publication

The author should not generally publish manuscripts describing essentially the same studies in more than one journal or primary publication. Simultaneous publication of the same manuscript to several magazines is considered as an unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. The academic journal «History, archeology and ethnography of the Caucasus» will reject any article, submitted for consideration in another journal or published previously.

The publication of certain types of articles (for example, public documents, translations) in more than one case is sometimes justified under certain conditions. The authors and

editors of the relevant journals must agree with the secondary publication, which should reflect the same data and interpretation of the primary document. Confirmation of sources

It is always necessary to give proper confirmation of the work of others. Authors should refer to publications that affect the definition of the nature of the work being reported. Information received in confidence, whether in conversation, correspondence or discussion with third parties, is not necessarily to be used or communicated without explicit written permission from the source. Information obtained during the provision of confidential services, for example, handwritten manuscripts or applications for grants, should not be used without the explicit written permission of the author of the work, studying with these services.

The authorship of paper

Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the concept, design, implementation or interpretation of the published study. Anyone who has made a significant contribution should be listed as a co-author. Where there are others who have participated in certain significant project trials, they must be recognized or listed. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors are included in the paper, and that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.

Dangers and subjects of man

If the work involves the use of humans, the author must ensure that all procedures have been complied in accordance with the principles of publishing ethics, addopted by the International sociological association (For more: http://www.isa-sociology.org/en/about-isa/code-of-ethics/), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 10.12.1948, and standards of GCP (Good Clinical Practice). Authors should include a statement in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained for experimentation with humans. Human rights must always be respected.

Disclosure of information and conflicts of interest

All authors must disclose in their manuscript any financial or other conflicts of interest that might influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.

Examples of potential conflicts that need to be disclosed include:

  • financial reward for participation in a research or writing the paper
  • relations (employment, consultations, share ownership, fees, paid expert testimony)
  • patent applications / registration on results of a research (copyrights and others)
  • financial support at any stage of a research or writing the paper (including grants or other funding)

Potential conflicts of interest should be disclosed at the earliest stage possible.

The information about conflicts of interest, obtained from the authors of manuscripts, is not disclosed to the reviewers and is available only to the Editorial Board for making decisions. In case of the positive decision on article publication, the information about any financial support or funding will be published within the full text of the article in «Acknowledgements».

Fundamental errors in published works

When an author finds a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the authors' obligation to notify the editorial staff about that to ensure its early retraction from publication. If the editor or publisher learns from a third party that the published work contains a significant error, it is the author's responsibility to immediately (no longer than 1 month) retract or correct the manuscript or provide evidence to the editor of the correctness of the manuscript

Publication Fee

Publication process in this journal is free for all authors.

The journal charge no publication fees for authors - including those of peer-review management, manuscript processing, journal production, Open-Access, online hosting and archiving. The journal asks no article processing charge in any forms.

 

Manuscript selection and preparation process

All documents received by the editorial board are prepared for publication in accordance with the Review Regulations (reference) and compliance with the Ethics of Publications Regulations (reference).

  1. Manuscripts, the course in the Journal, are reviewed by the Executive Secretary of the Editorial Board, who studies them for correspondence to the subject scope, archival editorial style, obvious scientific validity, topical importance, timeliness, relevant references and length. Exact requirements on the journal's website (Guidelines for authors). A manuscript that does not meet formal requirements is not accepted for publication, which is automatically notified to the author.
  2. The journal uses the ANTIPLAGIAT software (free edition) to detect plagiarism in all manuscripts in Russian. Google Scholar is used for manuscripts in English. Documents will be rejected from any stage of the publication process (even if the article is already published), if the plagiarism is fined, as reported to the author by automatic notification.
  3. The responcible secretary informs the author about the status of the manuscript of the automatic notification by e - mail after making appropriate changes in the author 's profile on the journal' s web site.
  4. The responsible secretary has a paper sent to two reviewers (approved by the editor-in-chief) on the ground. Reviewers are members of the Editorial Board, Editorial Board, a group of independent experts of the Journal or highly qualified scientists and experts from other organizations with deep knowledge and experience in a particular scientific field.
  5. To view the manuscript, it takes a maximum of three weeks. The magazine uses a double blind expert review (the author does not receive data on reviewers, reviewers do not receive any data about the author).
  6. If the reviewer recommends that the author review the manuscript, the Executive Secretary sends a review to the author with a proposal that they take into account when preparing a new version of the manuscript or a refutation (partial or dotted) of the reviewer's comment.
  7. Changes must be completed and sent within a month after the author receives comments from the reviewer. The author should also attach a letter with answers to all comments and explanations of all changes made to the manuscript (in a separate file and highlighted in the manuscript text). The revised manuscript and letter should be sent to the referee. The date when the editors receive the manuscript is the date of submission of its revised version.
  8. In case of negative feedback on the manuscript or its revised version, the manuscript is rejected with a mandatory review of the author about the reasons for such a decision.
  9. After the Editorial Board decides to accept the manuscript for publication, the Executive Secretary informs the author about the automatic notification and on the possible publication date.

The order of publication of manuscripts is determined by the date of registration of the manuscript. The Editorial Board reserves the right to publish manuscripts of special significance and novelty, out of turn. The editors do not discuss with their authors the contents of the manuscripts, the principles of their writing and the formatting of the manuscripts, and does not correct the manuscripts so that they correspond to the standards of the Journal.

All articles, published on this site, are open access and can be used for citing, copying, printing and other non-commercial use with respect to copyrights.

This journal permits and encourages authors to post items submitted to the journal on personal websites or institutional repositories both prior to and after publication, while providing bibliographic details that credit, if applicable, its publication in this journal.
