FEATURES OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE RUBASSIAN FORTIFICATION VI CENTURY (EASTERN CAUCASUS)

Abstract

The Rubas fortification is a unique complex of stone military engineering structures, which has no analogues. It was erected in the lower reaches of the river. Rubas, 20 km west of the Caspian Sea coast and the same distance southwest of the Derbent Pass. In terms of the main indicators (monumentality and functional orientation), it belongs to a series of protective borders of the Western Caspian region, erected by Persia with the assistance of Byzantium during the era of the Great Nations Migration. Typologically and chronologically - comparable with the fortress structures of Derbent, dating back to the 6th century.
Its uniqueness is due to the presence of monumental military engineering structures of various characteristics in terms of design and layout, united by construction links into a single object. Each structure carried a separate functional load, complementing the general tasks of a defensive nature.
At this facility, 6 military engineering structures were identified and investigated: 1) the construction of an arched structure; 2) wall number 1; 3) wall number 2; 4) wall number 3; 5) construction of a stepped structure (No. 6); 6) building No. 5 (platform). Each of them differs in layout, design solutions, complex of used building materials, technology of formation, location, and ultimately - functional purpose.
However, the analysis of the materials obtained shows that the various types of structures of this object are linked by a common strategic objective and a set of tactical techniques that ensure the functional purpose as a whole.
