TRADE RELATIONS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XVI CENTURY OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE WITH ENGLISH MERCHANTS IN THE EASTERN CAUCASUS

Abstract

This article examines the trade relations of the Ottoman Empire with English merchants in the Caucasus in the second half of the 16th century. England, which started to play an important role in world politics in the 16th century, first started its trade activities. The first concession certificate was given to English merchants in 1553 in Ottoman lands. This document was handed over to the English merchant Anthony Jenkinson by Sultan Süleyman. The document was given only to Jenkinson. Between 1579 and 1580, English merchants affiliated with the Muscovy Company traded in the Caucasus region with Özdemiroğlu Osman Pasha, one of the Ottoman Pashas. This trading activity seriously formed the basis of the first Ottoman-English trade relations. These trade relations would later form the basis of interstate trade relations. The Levant Company, founded on September 11, 1581, was inspired by the trading activities of English merchants who worked in the Muscovy Company, which established trade relations with the Ottomans in the Caucasus. For the first time in Russian, the article provides the text of the Ottoman-English treaty of 1580.
