Abstract

The author of the article highlights the problem of the origin ofKubachi art, basing on the monuments of stone-cutting art of the 13th-15th centuries:reliefs (details of architectural decoration) with figural subjects, gravestones with ornamental Arabic inscriptions and floral ornament, and artistically decorated bronze pots. The author argues against the researchers who consider that medieval art of the village Kubachi was entirely brought from the Middle East. He argues that stone reliefs and gravestones were made by the local craftsmen from Zirikhgeran, who were ancestors of the Kubachins, with the direct participation of the craftsmen who arrived or were specially invited from the Middle East - stonecutters, calligraphers, experts in architecture and decorative art, builders. The author refers to the facts, which suggest that the village Kubachi was notfounded at the end of the 13th – beginning of the 14th century by newcomers from Asia Minor (Rum) or north-western Iraq (Jazeera), as some researchers believe, but it was founded at the beginning of the first millennium AD. The toponymZirikhgeranis referred to the area of current location of the village Kubachi and is identified with this populated locality. The author of the article criticizes Dode’s erroneous views concerning Mongolian attribution of the medieval stone reliefs with figural subjects from the village Kubachi.
