Abstract

The article presents Karol Kalinowski’s recollections of life and culture of Avars, Lezgins and Andis. The Pole found himself in the Caucasus as an exile of the royal army, which was located on this territory. In 1846, however, he was kidnaped and taken as a slave to independent mountaineers. It was then that the Pole got acquainted with the way of life of the people who were out of the control of the Russian administration. Due to the fact that K. Kalinowski’s main purpose was to return home, he fled to the Russian army. The soldier returned to Poland in 1858, and there he wrote the recollections of his stay in the Caucasus.
