Abstract

This study proposes an expanded conceptual framework for understanding the structure and development of ethnographic object complexes within museum exhibitions. By examining theoretical approaches to defining a “complex” across archeology, ethnography, and related humanities, this research prioritizes a systemic definition: a complex as an integrated system of elements operating under the influence of a dominant component. The construction of museum and exhibition displays is conceptualized as a process that transforms primary ethnographic complexes into secondary ones. In this model, primary complexes represent real-world “ethnographic cultural complexes” (ECCs), whereas secondary complexes represent the products of “ethnographic cultural reconstruction and museification” (ECRMs). To demonstrate the applicability of this framework, the study provides several modeling examples drawn from Adyghe ethnographic material, illustrating how specific cultural features form systemic complexes organized around a dominant element. The formation of the museum-exhibition version (ECRM) is analyzed as a process of continuous semiotic recoding, alongside the secondary modeling of cultural phenomena within an artificial display environment. Throughout the trajectory from documenting real-world ECCs in their authentic context to displaying ECRMs for public presentation, primary cultural data undergoes multiple stages of recoding and interpretive synthesis. Ultimately, the final interpretive recoding emerges at the intersection of museified cultural complexes (ECRMs) and communicative strategies designed to engage museum visitors.
