Abstract

The article covers a manysided, multifold, polymorphous, syncretical and ambivalent mythological image of the Great Mother Goddess, associated with fertility cult. This image is reflected in mythologies and beliefs of the peoples of Dagestan. Many female characters of the pantheon and pandemonium of the Dagestan peoples go back to the Great Ancestress. The author believes that the transformationsof this image are connected with natural and historical processes (politogenesis, revolution in the gender interrelation, formation of the pantheon headed by God the Father).
