Abstract

The article addresses a fundamentally important, yet long-overshadowed, aspect of regional history that has largely escaped the attention of historians, ethnologists, and sociologists. The study is aimed at deconstructing stereotypes regarding women in traditional societies. The thesis presenting women as exclusively passive victims of circumstances, embodying modesty and victimhood, is critically revised. At the center of the authors’ attention is the phenomenon of female violence (physical and psychological) originating from women as active agents. For a mountain woman (goryanka) living in a society undergoing a transition from tradition to modernity, violence serves not merely as a form of aggression or assertion of power, but as a means of resistance and a survival tool within the specific socio-historical conditions of Kabardino-Balkaria from the late 19th century to the 1980s. Drawing on an interdisciplinary approach that combines the methods of microhistory, gender analysis, and historical anthropology, the study examines court archives, customary law (adat) materials, narrative sources (travel notes, chronicles, authorial field research data), and the folklore of the indigenous peoples of the republic. The aim of the article is to examine the specifics, conditions, and extent of female aggression within a changing socio-historical context. The research demonstrates that overlooking this “dark” topic leads to an oversimplified understanding of historical gender roles. The authors conclude that introducing the topic of female violence into academic discourse not only fills a historiographical gap in the history of Kabardino-Balkaria, but also offers new analytical tools for a deeper, multifaceted, and nuanced understanding of gender dynamics in traditional societies.
