Abstract

For the past two years, the historians of the Russian Revolution and the Civil War have published a number of books, devoted to those large-scale events of the 20th century. Most of these books analyze the Revolution and the Civil War in the former imperial centers, i.e. Petrograd and Moscow. The more valuable are the works on the situation and political actors on the peripheries. Among those works is the book of G. Kakagasanov about the famous Daghestan political and religious figure Uzun-Haji al-Salti. The archival material, included in this book, shows how the collapse of the old order in the Russian Empire in 1917 gave a chance to religious and political leaders on the periphery to develop and implement their own visions of the future. The book describes the path of Uzun-Haji, his strive to reestablish the Islamic State and situation, where Uzun-Haji's project failed.
