Abstract

The article deals wit h the use of militia troops within the period of the second Imam Gamzatbek’s rule. The author presents the documents and eyewitness accounts of those events, showing when and where the Imam used the militia troops. The analysis of Gasanilav Gimrinsky’s well - known work enables to assume that the militia troops first appeared under Imam Gazimuhammad’s rule. On a voluntary basis Gazimuhammad collected on a mass scale the troops from various areas and societies in one particular place. Imam Gamzatbek continued formation and replenishment of the troops in different societies. Any resident who was able and willing could take part in the troops. However, at the days of Gamzatbek, as well as under Gazimuhammad’s rule, the militia troops were not a strong, unified and developed military formation headed by commander - in-chief.
