Abstract

The article covers the events that took place during the period of annexation of the Mervoasis of today’s Turkmenistan (formerly Trans-Caspian region) to the Russian Empire, particularly the battle at the Russian-Afghan border on 18 (30) March, 1885, in which 110 Turkmen militiamen took part, as well as the activity of the Russian officer, Avar by nationality Maksud Alikhanov (1846-1907) in the then Turkmenistan. By M.Alikhanov - Avarskiy’s efforts and with his direct involvement, at the beginning of 1884 the annexation of the Merv oasis was held in a peaceful way, using diplomatic means, as opposed to the Akhal-Teke armed operation in Geok-Tepe in 1881. The first governor of the newly formed Merv province Lieutenant Colonel (later Major General) M.Alikhanov-Avarskiy commanded the main forces, including the Turkmen militia, in the battle at the river Kushka against the invading Afghans in one of the numerous episodes of the Russian-British confrontation of that period (“Big game”).
